Prof. Krzysztof Bankiewicz

Professor Krzysztof Bankiewicz is a leader in gene therapy to the brain who has brought multiple AAV-based therapies to the clinic. He is the Kinetics Foundation Chair in Translational Research and tenured Professor in Residence of Neurological Surgery and Neurology at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF). Prof. Bankiewicz is also Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Neurosurgery and Director of Interventional Neurology Center (INC) at UCSF and co-Director of INC at Brodno Hospital in Warsaw, Poland. Prof. Bankiewicz has both industry and academic experience, is an inventor on numerous patents and has published over 200 peer-reviewed research articles.

He has considerable experience in supervising multi-investigator translational programs and is a Principal Investigator on several multi-center, multi-investigator grants and clinical trials. He has supervised over 40 postdoctoral fellows and residents and manages a core research group of 20 individuals, including technicians, postdoctoral fellows and senior scientists. Throughout his career, Prof. Bankiewicz has maintained a strong focus on the development of translational approaches to gene and cell replacement therapies, and he has displayed the ability to synthesize distinct technologies into powerful new approaches to the treatment of serious diseases, including brain cancer, Parkinson's disease, Huntington’s disease, Alzheimer’s diseases, pediatric neurotransmitter deficiency and lysosomal storage disorders.
Bankiewicz Group has evolved as one of the leading neurological translational teams in the US. Prof. Bankiewicz was able to develop critical collaborations between academia, government and industry to accelerate development of advanced therapies for the brain and brain tumors. Dr. Bankiewicz co-founded 2 biotechnology companies and holds over 10 issued US patents.
Professor Bankiewicz holds an M.D. degree from Jagiellonian University in Crakow and a Ph.D., D.Sc. degrees from the Institute of Neurology and Psychiatry in Warsaw, and Professor title by the President of Republic of Poland. Dr. Bankiewicz was a recipient of Fogarty Fellowship and trained at the National Institutes of Neurological Disorders and Stroke at NIH, Bethesda, MD. USA.
